Natalie + Ian | Tipi wedding in Norfolk
When I first met Natalie and Ian at a wedding fair late 2016, as they described to me their Norfolk woodland wedding complete with tipi, all I could think was SIGN ME UP! I do love a unique wedding, and their vision of a summertime wedding with a tipi in the Norfolk countryside complete with bouncy castle, coconut shy and other games sounded right up my street. They’d planned an outdoor ceremony using Hush Venues, a woodland wedding venue set in 200 acres of Norfolk countryside, followed by their reception and party in a tipi, on the edge of the woods. And as this was August, it would be a bright, hot, sunny day, perfect for an outdoor wedding. We can rely on the British weather, right….?
Natalie and Ian got ready separately, with the bride doing her preparation at Colts Lodge, a lovely little B&B situated a few hundred yards from the main woodland. It was a relaxed, sunny morning, and it was great to be able to spy on guests from afar, arriving for the ceremony across the fields and into the forest. The ceremony was being held in a rustic wooden building called The Olde Woodshed in the middle of the woods, unprotected from the elements, at one with nature. And nature definitely wanted to be as one (read on).
As the ceremony time approached, the sun ominously ducked behind some clouds, and the sky began to darken. Never to be deterred, Natalie and her Dad began the walk across the fields from the lodge over to where family and friends, and most importantly Ian, were waiting. Just as the bride began to approach, the heavens opened, and Mother Nature decided this would be the perfect time to send in some wind and rain for the outdoor ceremony! I couldn’t believe it, it had been so nice all morning! Sensibly, the wedding guests had brought waterproofs and umbrellas and gamely stayed put as Natalie arrived at the ceremony, which was conducted under cover in The Olde Woodshed, as the wind and rain whistled through, making it hard to remember we were in August! But Natalie and Ian appeared not to care one bit about the weather, and only had eyes for each other on their special day.
The rain continued for a little bit as we made our way through the winding woodland path back to the tipi, which had been beautifully decorated with lots of lovely DIY touches, including bunting, wellies as table decorations with individual messages about love on each, and jars of jam as wedding favours for each guest – including me! I was chuffed 🙂
Soon enough the rain subsided, and then the August sunshine broke through once more to dry everything quickly, and the afternoon became the warm and sunny day we were all anticipating. Guests enjoyed a bouncy castle, high striker (strong man game) and a coconut shy, which I must tell you that I casually went over in the rain and knocked a coconut right off with my one and only throw. True story!! A guest saw me do it, but I know what you’re thinking: pictures or it never happened.
Happy Hour were the wedding band of choice, and they played a lively set into the evening as the sun eventually went down, giving Natalie and Ian the summer’s evening they deserved. The day was topped off with Christophe’s Crepe van serving delicious crepes with a variety of fillings, which was a huge hit with guests (and photographers, as evidenced by moi):
